Starting out

Pre-production

Making my first Documentary: Where do I start?

In College, I have been assigned a group project to make a documentary on “Cancel Culture” and “Online Shaming” I am happy to tackle this subject, I strongly feel that if we lose our “freedom of speech” we could potentially stifle the future generations voice and creativity. I agree that some things that are said, need to be challenged but when it leads to people getting death threats it goes too far!

We started by being assigned our topics and groups from our Tutor, I am in a group with three other girls. We are all happy to tackle our topic as it is something we all feel passionate about. We discussed they fact that we are all not happy to be in front of the camera so we researched an animation website (Create) to see if we can maybe produce an avatar to talk on camera. We then browsed the web to check which celebrities have been cancelled, (13 Celebs Who Were Actually Canceled In 2020) some of these people we were aware of like, “JK Rowling” and Ellen DeGeneres” and some we didn’t know about. I also said we should be looking at political figures that had been cancelled. Kate spoke about her neighbour (an influencer) that was constantly being body shamed and bullied online. Kate suggested that she contact that lady to see if she would give us and interview about her experience. Kelly and I thought this were a great idea, it will give a more personal touch to the documentary if we have an opinion from a person going through that online abuse.

So next we decided to split the workload as it doesn’t really make sense to all be researching everything. I chose to research the negatives and positives of “Cancel Culture” Kelly and Kate divided “Online Shaming” between them. We do have another girl in our group but as she wasn’t in class, we couldn’t really assign any work to her as we need to get started on our pre-production. Kelly formed a group on “MS Teams” to contact the other girl to tell her about our topic, group members and ask her if she was going to participate, if not we needed to know, either way.

I am excited to get started on this group project, I like working in this team, Kelly and Kate have had some brilliant suggestions for our project and we are all bouncing ideas off each other, I feel we will work well together and hopefully make a documentary to be proud of!
