Technological evolution

Evolution in technology

When man discovered fire to when they made the first windmill to create power to then lead on to where technology is today, would have been unthinkable a couple of decades ago.

Most people I know have mixed feelings about technology, we can all agree about the positive advances in technology like medical advances. “Advances in areas of anatomy and physiology enhanced life expectancy and reduced illnesses. By the end of the 19th century, the importance of technology had been firmly established and it was clear that dependence on it would only grow.” (Knowledgehut, 2016) A lot of people are addicted to technology for example smartphone addiction and social media addiction, I really fear for the future generation because they are hooked on likes and striving for perfection online but as most people know no one is perfect and to try and keep up the pretense is soul destroying and crippling young people’s mental health and confidence. Human evolution is deeply linked to technological evolution but in recent years it has shown a very worrying trend to how much our thoughts are being mined and used to control what we buy, what we believe, and even what medical advice we take or don’t take(vaccines) from the apps we use on our phones/tablets and even smart devices like “Alexa”. We as people seem to also crave buying the latest gadget and it is this thirst for the next big thing that pushes technology and consumerism ahead.

In the 20th century, inventors created a lot of new technology that both scared and excited people. Airplanes, nuclear power, rockets, and antibiotics created solutions but were also quite scary for people to understand at first. Unfortunately, it also saw the overuse of natural resources which led to rapid growth and prosperity but also led to future problems with pollution and the destruction of the world’s natural energy sources.

Now in the 21st century, our communication through technology has reached a much higher level. Most people prefer messaging each other through things like WhatsApp, Messenger, discord, etc. than talking to each other in person. “In fact, there are almost as many cell phone subscriptions (6.8 billion) as there are people living on this planet (7 billion). By 2014 there were more than 3.8 billion email accounts, and this number only keeps growing.” (Knowledgehut, 2016)

Technology has guided us to have greater freedom of information, has opened the communication of the world, and has no doubt increased our medical advances, but big business has managed to destroy our world in the process and now we face the fact that Climate change may be irreversible!
