Rewrite#3
What is Digital Media?
Digital Media
is how we use electronic devices to distribute media, by creating software,
video games, websites, social media, and online advertising. In this assignment, we were asked to watch three videos about Digital media. Before I watched the
designated videos, I thought that the tools and skills I needed are good ICT
skills, Art and design skills, coding, and a good knowledge and grasp of social
media. After watching the videos, I realized that what I really need is strong
Digital Literacy skills, the reason we need this is because we are increasingly
communicating and accessing information through a variety of different digital
environments, and we have an ethical responsibility to portray the truth. In
the 1960’s media theorist Marshall McLuhan took these ideas a step further when
he said, “the medium is the message” (Minesota)I think he meant that every
medium portrays information in different ways and that content is shaped by the
medium of transmission.
What is Digital literacy? Digital literacy refers to an individual's
ability to find, evaluate, and clearly communicate information through media on
various digital platforms. It is evaluated by an individual's grammar,
composition, typing skills, and ability to produce text, images, audio, and designs
using technology. While digital literacy initially focused on digital skills
and stand-alone computers, (Digital literacy, n.d.) the advent of the internet and the use
of social media, have resulted in the shift in some of its focus to mobile
devices. (Smarts, n.d.)
Three ways traditional marketing is different from Digital/social media: (16 Differences between traditional media and social
networking, n.d.)
1. Traditional media is a
one-way conversation, whereas Digital/social media is a two-way conversation.
2. Traditional media aims
to market to the masses; social media tends to connect on a more one-to-one
basis.
3. Traditional media is
pre-produced and scheduled, Digital/social media involves more real-time
creation.
People create media for lots of reasons, for entertainment, to educate and inform, to create a public forum for discussions of important reasons (the internet is a democratic medium to express your opinion through things like blogging and podcasting) and as watchdogs for business, government, and other institutions.
When I was growing up my dad used
to buy a paper every day, I enjoyed reading that paper and at that time
believed every word, I now know from what I have learned in my Digital media
studies that media is not always telling the truth and sometimes there is a
hidden agenda or a marketing strategy involved in what is being presented to
the public.
What I learned from watching the three videos is that
we have a duty to produce media that is fact-checked, when we are creating
digital media, it is our social responsibility to make sure we are not creating
“Fake News” I also realized how important ethical factors are when creating
digital media. Ideas can spread very quickly over the internet and can also be
remixed.
