Looking back

My final project blog! When we started the project, I was enthusiastic about working as a team, I usually love doing teamwork, I find collaboration great for brainstorming and coming up with ideas. Our group had to make a documentary on “Online shaming and Cancel culture”. We started off with four members, but it quickly became evident that one member wasn’t really pushed about participating, we tried lots of times to engage with that girl and get her involved even down to the last week, but she wasn’t interested. So, we were down to a team of three, I oversaw research and the script, I separated the script into three parts so myself, Kelly, and Kate could all share the screen. Now you would think that would be easy, wouldn’t you? Well, you try recording with a puppy and children in the house, by the time I was able to get a decent video recorded it was only two days before we had to submit the video. I had made Kelly aware of my recording issues so we decided that Kelly would ...

Post Production

The penultimate project blog, how exciting! The week started badly with the information that both Sophia and Kate were off College sick, as I was sick last week that puts our project nearly two weeks behind, we haven’t even started recording yet and myself and Kelly are starting to panic. This week Kate sent me an initial draft of the script, which was about five hundred words, I estimated that we need about one thousand words, so I edited and lengthened the script, and I made the final draft. I found it hard to edit Kate’s draft, it was stressful, but I managed to finalize the script. Kelly completed the animations and posters, and she also made a test recording on I Video to see how her animations and posters would look when played on screen together. Kelly and I broke the script into steps to co-ordinate with our running order for when we are recording. We then decided that maybe we should record ourselves to test out recording (and in case Kate and Sophia are too sick to re...

Final re-write!

Image
Ah, Final Re-Write, it feels so good to write those words! So, this is my final reading blog for Semester one in my module “Introduction to Digital Media” on our college course “Creative Digital Media” and I am going to discuss how I felt about getting reviewed by my peers and my lecturer about my blogs and my re-writing experience. Introduction to digital media has been the hardest module, with the most work involved but for me, it has also been the most enjoyable educational and enlightening module. When we were asked to give peer review, I didn’t really like that experience initially but when we learned about how to give positive feedback(feedforward) I realized that it benefited both me and the student who was receiving my feedback. This week I received feedback from my lecturer. The feedback was positive, which is good, but because I only really got one sentence about changing my blog for a re-write, I did struggle a bit to get started on my revised blog. Thankfully we had l...

What is Digital Media? Digital Media is how we use electronic devices to distribute media, by creating software, video games, websites, social media, and online advertising. In this assignment, we were asked to watch three videos about Digital media. Before I watched the designated videos, I thought that the tools and skills I needed are good ICT skills, Art and design skills, coding, and a good knowledge and grasp of social media. After watching the videos, I realized that what I really need is strong Digital Literacy skills, the reason we need this is because we are increasingly communicating and accessing information through a variety of different digital environments, and we have an ethical responsibility to portray the truth. In the 1960’s media theorist Marshall McLuhan took these i...

Media Representation

Image
Media representation is the way the media characterizes daily life and news, for example how they show different communities, ideas, events, or topics from a particular perspective or ideology. There is huge power in mass media for influencing society, so it is imperative that they get it right but unfortunately, they often don’t, and there are many people who are treated unfairly in the media like ethnic communities and women. Many different cultures feel that they are misrepresented in the mainline media, they feel there is a lack of diversity, think about it? most media companies are led by wealthy white straight men so unfortunately a lot of the time, media has limited representations. “A new survey, commissioned by The Runnymede Trust, has found that four out of every five people (78%) thought that the way that the media portrays ethnic minorities promotes racism. This concern was not just expressed by respondents who were from minority ethnic backgrounds. Over two-thirds (76%) ...

Another revision

Image
For this week’s reading task, we were given the challenge of reviewing our fellow students' feedback on our blog. I chose to have my blog on “Active reading” reviewed. We had to take that feedback, review our original blog, and rewrite our blog. I received only one comment on my blog which was all very positive and basically said my blog was perfect? So, what am I supposed to do with that comment? Well, I chose to look over my blog myself and see if I needed to change anything. I decided to change the photo so that it stood out a bit more, then I decided to justify my paragraphs to make them appear more uniform, then I played around with the font size and style. When I was finished changing font etc. I re-read my blog and decided that I should add more to the last bit, where originally, I had ended on one line. I decided I should add another paragraph here because the blog sort of ended abruptly. I wasn’t sure what else to do because you must be careful not to fill up your blog wit...

Reading an academic paper on active reading, what have I learned? The paper is titled “using student-constructed questions to encourage active reading” It was published in 1984 by the Author Ernest Baljthy.   (Bajthy, 1984)  This paper seemed to be aimed at teachers who want to encourage their students to open their minds and think about questioning pieces of text to help them remember what they are studying. Although it seems to be aimed at teachers, I think students can also learn from it. At first glance, I wasn’t sure how to condense the information in the text, but then I put into practice some active reading skills I have learned, I skimmed over the main bulk of the text, and then I looked out for text that would be relevant to this assignment. After deciphering this paper, I have learned to approach my reading with a more critical eye, If I question what I am reading and take notes, I will learn more from the text. Teaching yourself to self-question will make you...
