Starting out

Image
Making my first Documentary: Where do I start? In College, I have been assigned a group project to make a documentary on “Cancel Culture” and “Online Shaming” I am happy to tackle this subject, I strongly feel that if we lose our “freedom of speech” we could potentially stifle the future generations voice and creativity. I agree that some things that are said, need to be challenged but when it leads to people getting death threats it goes too far! We started by being assigned our topics and groups from our Tutor, I am in a group with three other girls. We are all happy to tackle our topic as it is something we all feel passionate about. We discussed they fact that we are all not happy to be in front of the camera so we researched an animation website   (Create) to see if we can maybe produce an avatar to talk on camera. We then browsed the web to check which celebrities have been cancelled,   (13 Celebs Who Were Actually Canceled In 2020) some of these people we were aw...

Peer review 1

Image
This week we were tasked with writing a review on two of our fellow student’s blogs, we also received a review on our blogs, from our peer’s. We started by reading articles about the different ways we can give feedback, we studied about giving feedforward  (Goldsmith) and how that advice comes across more positively, we also learned about mirror advice  (Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset) and how having a growth mindset can really affect a person’s work ethic. We spoke about how we should receive feedback, we read about how having a fixed mindset can stop you from developing new skills, we learned it is important to receive feedback and how you can use it, to positively influence your creative work. Most people don’t particularly like getting feedback as no matter how it is intended, sometimes it can come across as criticism and can be demoralising and unproductive for future work. I liked reading the review on my blogs, as I am recen...

Design thinking is how you approach innovation, if you understand your customer’s needs, you will consider creating ideas with a more open mind, that will transform the way you develop products. When using design thinking, you make creative decisions grounded on what customers really want. It is important to be aware of what your customers need. Gather information by seeking inspiration and discovering new ideas. Use your research to help you “think outside of the box” making new solutions to the client’s problem. Build prototypes, check what is working and most importantly what doesn’t work, gather feedback. Show your ideas to your colleagues. Some of these steps may happen several times, and you may even jump back and forth between them. Moving through the phases of design thinking can take you from a blank slate to a new, innovative solution. When you are completely happy with your design show it to your client for approval.   (Design thinking)   There are many digital...

Media Literacy

Image
I really enjoyed reading the prescribed articles this week, I found the journal article about news bias, personal bias ( A journalist may be biased towards a particular story and may add his/her opinion to the news report. This kind of media bias is purely based on the journalist’s own opinion) and unbiased reporting interesting. (Tully, 2021) There was a time when we could rely on the various types of media for accurate information. But in recent times, the media especially social media has gained a reputation, for sensationalizing certain events or news pieces.  Although I was aware of how the media can sensationalise articles, I didn’t realise that there are so many different types of media bias for example: Religious bias Some countries either highlight the prominent religion of the state or country or speak ill of the religion that governs the same. Most countries think this is illegal, others aren’t respectful when it comes to how they portray religion to the audienc...

Digital Media

Image
Digital Media Digital media is how we use electronic devices to distribute media, by creating software, video games, websites, social media, and online advertising. In this assignment we were asked to watch three videos about Digital media. Before I watched the designated videos, I thought that the tools and skills I needed are good ICT skills, Art and design skills, coding and a good knowledge and grasp of social media. After watching the videos, I realised that what I really need is strong Digital Literacy skills, the reason we need this is because we are increasingly communicating and accessing information through a variety of different digital environments, and we have an ethical responsibility to portray the truth. In the 1960’s media theorist Marshall McLuhan took these ideas a step further when he said “the medium is the message” (Minesota) I think he meant that every medium portrays information in different ways and that content is shaped by the medium of transmission. ...

Active reading

Image
Reading an academic paper on active reading, what have I learned? The paper is titled “using student constructed questions to encourage active reading” It was published in 1984 by the Author Ernest Baljthy.   (Bajthy, 1984) This paper seemed to be aimed at teachers who want to encourage their students to open their minds and think about questioning pieces of text to help them remember what they are studying. Although it seems to be aimed at teachers, I think students can also learn from it. At first glance I wasn’t sure how to condense the information in the text, but then I put into practise some active reading skills I have learned, I skimmed over the main bulk of the text and then I looked out for text that would be relevant to this assignment. After deciphering this paper, I have learned to approach my reading with a more critical eye, If I question what I am reading and take notes, I will learn more from the text. Teaching yourself to self-question will make you beco...

Sometimes the thought of studying can be overwhelming, especially if you have lots of different types of subjects, which can lead to procrastinating. The best way to get started is to get organised, look at your time management, figure out when is the best time for you to slot in some College work. I find I work best in the mornings, so I try to get m...

Introduction

Image
My name is Jennifer Lynch, I am 44 years of age (which means I am probably the oldest student in Creative Digital Media!) I am married, I have two children, both boys, one fourteen-year-old and one eleven-year-old. I was a stay-at-home mam for many years, but I went back to work about five years ago in a post office. unfortunately, I lost my job when the Pandemic hit. I decided it was time to upskill, so I applied to study Digital Media Level 5 in Riversdale College. I really enjoyed my time studying, learning new skills, and improving some old skills. I performed very well in Level 5 receiving a Distinction, my career guidance teacher encouraged me to apply for further study. I would love to teach Digital Media, but I know I have a long way to go before I can do that, starting here in the first year of Creative Digital Media! I have a mixture of emotions about starting in College, I am excited, anxious, uncertain and I have an overwhelming feeling of "information overload"...
